About Karen

Karen Wyse has been involved in the arts for over 50 years! She has been written about in a book entitled, “Weird Rooms”—by Mal and Sandra Sharpe. She has also appeared in magazine and newspaper articles throughout the years. There are now three films about Karen and her art: (1) “A Folk Tale—the Art of Karen Wyse” by Shirin Etessam, and (2) “Gypsy Haven/Gypsy Mavin—A Walk Through the Art of Karen Wyse” and (3) Karen's House of Collage — both by Erica Jordan. All of these films can be viewed on YouTube. After living for many years in Orinda, Karen now resides in Moraga, California with her husband Matt Wyse. She has a studio and gallery on her property. Currently she is involved in some new and exciting on-site projects. The Bizarre Bazaar days (her vintage clothing store on College Avenue, Oakland, 1970s–80s) are recorded on Facebook at Friends of Bizarre Bazaar of Oakland, California.

"For various reasons, I seem to have access to all sorts of paper, cards, photos, brochures and announcements. In fact, sometimes I feel bombarded with them! The challenge to assemble, build, change, make dense, sometimes to even completely reconstruct and transform them is very exciting. It runs parallel to how I feel about life—i.e. to change, transform, reconstruct it—anything other than “giving in” to problems or the status quo. A form of alchemy, if you will, which has always fascinated me.

The process of making these books also involved extending and developing relationships with many of my friends and relatives. They’ve sent me photographs, both current and old, which was a great impetus and inspiration to me to continue working.

Collages can be very complex and demanding. After all, there are always an endless number of permutations, options and ideas available. They can also act as a healing device against loneliness, pain and sadness in allowing you to “get out of your head” and into a different dance!! All in all it’s been a ”gas” (my Mom Phyllis Miller used to use that expression). I hope these works are a gas for you, too."

Limited printed copies of the collages are available for sale. Please email me for more information.

P.S. In memory of my oldest friend, Debbie Phelps.

And further loving memory of the many other loved ones in my life: including our very sweet friend Ralph Harriman, my steadfast and true buddy, Steve Hamlin; EZRA the Great Cat Pound and certainly not least, my grand old ocelot, Cesar—all of whom I miss greatly!! KW
